A Frail Nation Under Stress: Climate Change and Filipino Resilience
Philippines, being one of the countries in the world which is known for its beauty, experienced ultimate climatic conditions brought climate change, which it will cause a more and more impact the day to day lifeline of Filipinos. Such changes are mainly due to global warming and its consequences. The incursion of warmer global temperatures brings about more recurring and intense heat waves, exacerbating already direct situations like drought and a scarcity of water, which particularly impacts the agricultural sector, a most crucial foundation of the Philippine economy. Farmers are tasked to cope up with crop yields because they face crop failure and livestock mortality where their food security and way of living are compromised.
The climate change also brought about an increased number of other extreme weather events, including typhoons and floods. The disasters cause widespread destruction, displacing communities, damaging infrastructure, and disruptions in the economic activity. The Philippines is placed in the typhoon belt and one of the most vulnerable parts to these events which have devastating effects on coastal communities whose livelihoods often depend on fishing and tourism. Climate change affects these through the increase in sea levels which erodes the coast and causes saltwater intrusion, thus, displacing dwellers along the coast.
But through traditional knowledge and innovations, Filipinos show great resilience amidst challenges. Affected communities are able to cope with the risks involved through such early warning systems as well as new farming practices in order to build up their resilience. That has to do with limited resources, lack of access to technology, and lack of government support most of the time. Such vulnerabilities underpin the urgent need for a strong, collaborative approach in countries such as the Philippines to strengthen disaster preparedness, invest in climate-resilient infrastructure, support sustainable development practices, and advocate for wider global action to mitigate the impact of climate change.
